Ubiquitous connectivity and cloud computing, together with data and decision sciences, has the potential to transform mobility and transportation services. This talk reviews this opportunity from its societal impact, to the development of new mobility systems, and the data and decision science powering them. In particular, the talk reviews recent developments in on-demand multimodal systems and trip sharing, as well as progress in optimization and differential privacy to meet current and future challenges.
Pascal Van Hentenryck is the Seth Bonder Collegiate Professor of Engineering at the University of Michigan. He is a professor of Industrial and Operations Engineering, a professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, and a core faculty in the Michigan Institute of Data Science. His current research focuses on data science and optimization, with applications in energy, transportation, resilience, and computational social science. Prior to this appointment, he led the optimization research group (about 70 people) at National ICT Australia (NICTA) and was a professor of Computer Science at Brown University for about 20 years, which he joined after his PhD in Belgium.
