Satellite Digital Audio Radio in ConUS

Dr. Korkut Yegin
SHARE:

Satellite Digital Radio Services (SDARS) covering continental US (ConUS) will be reviewed and discussed in this talk. The mobile receiver compromises a passive antenna, a low-noise amplifier, a digital receiver, and a control panel including the interface with the audio system. Each of the system components will be described in terms of RF perspective. First, the impact of passive antenna and its low-noise amplifier performance on the gain-over-temperature of the receiver will be presented. Then, the digital receiver architecture and its key components will be described. When the mobile platform is a non-metallic surface, as in the case of composite body vehicles, the reception of the antenna degrades significantly, and a need for multiple antennas in a diversity setting arises. In this case, the receiver architecture and the diversity algorithm play a key role in system performance. Efforts on diversity systems to achieve superior performance will also be discussed briefly.
Korkut Yegin received his B.S. degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Middle East Technical University, Ankara, Turkey in 1992. He attended Clemson University from 1994 to 1999 to receive M.S. degree in Electrical Engineering in 1996, M.S. degree in Physics in 1998, and Ph.D. degree in 1999. He was a post-doctoral research fellow at University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign from 2000 to 2002. Since 2002, he has been with the Electronics and Safety division of Delphi Corporation as an advanced development engineer.
