The Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad: Vision & Collaborations

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Hyderabad admitted the first batch of 111 B.Tech. students, and started functioning on August 20, 2008. (www.iith.ac.in). Three departments, CSE, EE & ME were initiated. In January 2009, IIT Hyderabad admitted 11 PhD students. On February, 27, 2009, the foundation stone of IIT Hyderabad was laid by Smt. Sonia Gandhi, Hon'ble Chairperson of UPA. For the 2009-10 academic year, IITH has admitted 114 B.Tech. students, and 35 M.Tech. students. IITH has 10 Ph.D. students and plans to plans to admit about 10 to 15 Ph.D. students in January 2010.

IITH has embarked on an aggressive faculty recruitment drive. We have made 43 appointments in 9 disciplines and most have accepted. Aggressive faculty recruitment will be a continuous activity at IITH.

The institute has embarked on a visionary Master plan for a campus with 20,000 student population. Besides the standard science and technology disciplines, IITH plans to have diverse disciplines like, Bio-X, School of Design, School of Liberal Arts, Medical School and various other facets that will make it unique among the IITs and the world over.

IITH is looking at collaborations on various fronts:

4. Faculty Guest Chairs at IITH
5. Sabbatical Visits by Faculty
6. Offering of highly specialized modules
7. Bidding for joint projects
8. Establishment of Research centers in cutting-edge areas

10. Any other avenues which could prove valuable to both institutions
Professor Uday B. Desai is the founding Director of IIT Hyderabad, India. Professor Desai received the B. Tech. degree from IIT-Kanpur, in 1974, the M.S. degree from the State University of New York, Buffalo, in 1976, and the Ph.D. degree from The Johns Hopkins University in 1979, all in Electrical Engineering. Most recently he was a Professor of Electrical
Engineering at IIT-Bombay.

His research interests are in wireless communication, wireless sensor networks and statistical signal processing. He is also interested in multimedia, image and video processing, artificial neural networks, computer vision, and wavelet analysis. He is the Editor of the book "modeling and Applications of Stochastic Processes" (Kluwer Academic Press, Boston, U.S.A. 1986) and co-editor of Second Asian Applied Computing Conference, Springer Verlag (2004). He is also a co-author of two books "a Bayesian Approach to Image Interpretation" and "multifractal based Network Modeling" , both from Kluwer Academic Press.
