The Paradoxes of Network Security in the Medical Environment

IT Security in the Healthcare environment can be a tangle of regulatory
requirements and policies which can even conflict with the goal of
providing a safe and secure environment for medical information and
devices. Matt Braun will discuss some of these pitfalls and how they
can play out in the real world environment.
Matt Braun is the Director of Network & Infrastructure for University of New Mexico Hospitals and Health Sciences Center, one of American Hospitals Association's "100 Most Wired" Hospitals eight years in a row. He has 20 years of experience in Information Technology including Networking, Communications, Security, and System Administration. He has managed the network infrastructure design and implementation for over 1,000,000 square feet of healthcare, education, and research construction. He is a regular lecturer in the UNM Health Sciences Center Biomedical Informatics Seminar Series and in the UNM Anderson School of Management Information Assurance Program. He previously worked for MIT Information Systems where he led the Academic Computing Server Operations Team and the Network Security Team. He is also an Emergency Medical Technician who over the last 20 years has done EMS, Firefighting, Mountain Rescue, and Disaster Response. He has Bachelors' degrees in Mechanical Engineering and Theater from MIT and a Master's degree in Biomedical Engineering from UNC Chapel Hill where he was an NIH/NLM Medical Informatics Fellow.
