CSE Alumna Arzucan Ozgur receives Science Academy Young Scientist Award

Her research interests include text mining, natural language processing, and bioinformatics.

CSE Alumna Arzucan Ozgur (PhD CSE 2010) has been awarded a 2016 Science Academy Young Scientist Award (BAGEP 2016, Turkey). This award provides support to researchers under 40 in Turkey with the objective of rewarding the most brilliant and promising young academics with a prestigious grant which will help them further their research.

Arzucan Ozgur is an assistant professor at the Department of Computer Engineering at Bogazici University (Istanbul, Turkey). Her research interests include text mining, natural language processing, and bioinformatics. Her recent focus has been on developing machine learning and natural language processing based methods for information extraction from massive amounts of textual data including scientific publications and social media data. She holds a PhD degree in Computer Science and Engineering from the University of Michigan. She is a recipient of the European Commission Marie Curie Career Integration Grant.

Arzucan’s PhD thesis advisor at Michigan was Prof. Dragomir Radev. Her dissertation was entitled, “Text and Network Mining for Literature-Based Scientific Discovery in Biomedicine.”
