Patrick Pannuto selected for NSF and NDSEG Graduate Research Fellowships

CSE doctoral student Patrick Pannuto has been selected for two prestigious graduate fellowships to support his ongoing studies in computer science and engineering. The fellowships are from the National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship Program and the National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate Fellowship from the Department of Defense.

As an undergraduate and graduate student at Michigan, Pat has worked with Professor Prabal Dutta on the Cubic Millimeter (M3) project. M3 is a project aimed at defining and realizing the next generation of wireless sensor networks, packing a processor, radio, camera, and energy harvesting into a cubic millimeter form factor. The hope is to build a platform to enable a greater density of intelligent, networked systems and to drive the transition form an Internet of PCs and phones to the Internet of Things.

Beyond M3, Pat’s research includes facilitation of hardware/software co-design with an efficient, modular, hybrid simulation and emulation platform (M-ulator), building automation and control leveraging Powerline Communications, and a software defined radio platform for wireless sensor network research.

The National Science Foundation’s Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) recognizes and supports outstanding graduate students in NSF-supported science, technology, engineering, and mathematics disciplines who are pursuing research-based master’s and doctoral degrees in the U.S. and abroad. NSF Graduate Research Fellowships are the most prestigious awards available to students beginning their graduate studies in the sciences.

National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate Fellowship selections are made by the Air Force Research Laboratory/Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFRL/AFOSR), the Office of Naval Research (ONR), the Army Research Office (ARO), and the DoD High Performance Computing Modernization Program Office (HPCMO). The American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) administers the NDSEG Fellowship. The DoD offers these fellowships to individuals who have demonstrated the ability and special aptitude for advanced training in science and engineering.
