Bees

Honeybees are critical to the survival of many ecosystems around the world, yet their populations are dwindling due to a number of factors. Hobbyist beekeepers play a major role in sustaining these populations. In order to support their efforts, we built a low-cost, non-intrusive wireless beehive monitoring system. It consists of a network of in-hive devices (called Nodes) which collect data about the internal state of the hive including temperature, humidity, carbon dioxide levels, and audio frequency content. The nodes transmit this data via long-range radio waves to a central device (called the Gateway), which publishes it to the internet. Hive data can then be viewed live on a website. Because opening the hive during the winter months (November-March in Michigan) is dangerous to the bees, the device spends most of its life in a low-power sleep mode. This enables it to remain operational without battery replacement for up to 5 months. You can go to https://tinyurl.com/eecs473bees to see live beehive data collected by some of our devices in Tampa, Florida!

Bluetooth Wearable

AirRat

Those who use a computer mouse everyday are familiar with the consequences of prolonged use, from general pain and discomfort to long-term effects such as repetitive strain injury. Our wireless palm band mouse aims to minimize these effects while maintaining the speed and precision of a generic computer mouse. Users are able to execute commands such as cursor movement and scrolling through hand gestures, while left and right clicks are executed through a button press. Our ergonomic design comes at an affordable price without compromising on battery life or functionality.
