Alum Pin-Yu Chen receives 2024 Young Professional Industry Leadership Award

Alumnus Pin-Yu Chen (Ph.D. ECE 2016) received the 2024 Young Professional Industry Leadership Award from IEEE Signal Processing Society, “for research and industry impact for machine learning robustness and AI safety.” The award is presented to outstanding young scientists in industry.
Dr. Chen is currently a Principal Research Scientist of the Trusted AI Group, IBM Thomas J. Watson Research Center. He is also the Chief Scientist of RPI-IBM AI Research Collaboration program.
He has received the International Joint Conferences on Artificial Intelligence Organization (IJCAI) Computers and Thought Award, which is presented at IJCAI conferences to outstanding young scientists in artificial intelligence. He is co-author on several Best Paper Awards, and has received numerous awards from IBM, including the IBM Corporate Technical Award on Trustworthy AI and the IBM Master Inventor award. He is an IEEE Fellow “for contributions to machine learning robustness and AI safety.”
The award was announced April 11, 2025 at the 2025 IEEE International Conference on Acoustics, Speech, and Signal Processing (ICASSP) in Hyderabad India.
Chen was advised by Alfred Hero, John H. Holland Distinguished University Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, R. Jamison and Betty Williams Professor of Engineering, and Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Michigan.
