Master’s student Dhanush Kumar Mallu receives Dow Sustainability Fellowship

The fellowship will support his efforts in AI-driven environmental sustainability initiatives.

Dhanush Kumar Mallu, a master’s student in computer science and engineering at the University of Michigan, has been awarded a 2025 Dow Sustainability Fellowship. This prestigious fellowship, supported by Dow and administered by the U-M Graham Sustainability Institute, recognizes Dhanush’s commitment to sustainable development and innovation.

The Dow Sustainability Fellowship program brings together an interdisciplinary group of graduate students from across the university, fostering collaboration in addressing pressing environmental challenges. Through this fellowship, Dhanush will join fellow cohort members from diverse disciplines in developing actionable solutions that advance sustainability goals.

As part of the fellowship, Dhanush will collaborate with the University of Michigan Water Center and the Western Lake Erie Basin Coalition on a critical environmental initiative. His team’s project focuses on reducing nutrient pollution in the Western Lake Erie Basin, an area significantly impacted by ecosystem challenges. His team aims to create a publicly accessible web platform designed to track and visualize ongoing nutrient reduction efforts, enhancing collaboration, resource sharing, and long-term sustainability across the region.

In addition to funding, the fellowship provides mentorship and networking opportunities with professionals in the field. Fellows gain valuable insights into real-world sustainability issues through site visits and direct engagement with Dow leaders, further preparing them for impactful careers.
