Reporting Concerns and Misconduct
In Computer Science and Engineering, we aspire to create an educational environment where all community members can thrive. Reporting climate concerns and misconduct can be confusing, and we are committed to supporting community members through this process. This page provides initial resources and information on how to formally report misconduct and other concerns in CSE.

When to report
CSE strives for a community built on respect and integrity. Actions against those values do not only hurt our community members, but weaken our community and what we can achieve as a whole. While we respect the choices of those who experience misconduct, we hope everyone feels comfortable pointing out instances of wrongdoing without fear of retaliation.
If you experience inappropriate behavior or misconduct, or if you are unsure that you have experienced such behavior, there are resources and contacts available to you. CSE encourages all students, faculty, and staff with concerns about the department or something they’ve experienced to report what they know through any of the channels described on this page.
For our graduate and undergraduate students, please do not hesitate to report things like poor classroom experiences, negative faculty or staff interactions, discrimination, or patterns of microaggresions. Even if your concern doesn’t fit the criteria for a formal university report, these are serious issues that deserve attention.
How to report
Please be aware that some contacts in the department and elsewhere at U-M are required to officially share your report, while others may be able to keep your conversation confidential.
There are three ways that you can report concerns or misconduct:
- Report anonymously: Submit an anonymous message. CSE maintains a form for encrypted reporting and a physical dropbox. Either way, your comment is anonymous.
- Report confidentially: Have a confidential conversation regarding your report with someone not mandated to share information
- File a formal report: Report through the U-M Ethics, Integrity, and Compliance website, though the Office of Institutional Equity, or through the U-M Division of Public Safety & Security, or discuss your concerns with an individual in CSE with reporting obligations
Message from Prof. Westley Weimer, faculty chair of the CSE Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee:
“If you have concerns or feedback about the department, I would honestly like to hear from you. I can keep your comments confidential and keep you anonymous. If you’re uncertain about trusting me, double check with one of the student groups, such as CSEG, ECSEL+, or ComputingForAll, who have worked with me in the past. I will take what you say seriously: we’d much rather know the truth. You don’t need to worry that a small misunderstanding will get someone in trouble, but neither should you worry that your experiences will be overlooked. Even if something appears to be a minor incident that you could brush off, hearing about it could help us determine that it is part of a trend. We’re committed to improving the department’s climate, and the first step of that is understanding how things really are: I do want to hear from you!”
There are two ways that you may submit an anonymous report.
Submit an encrypted message
Any student, staff, or faculty can submit an anonymous, encrypted message via the form below which will be delivered directly to Prof. Westley Weimer, faculty chair of the CSE Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee.
Use our physical drop box
A physical drop box for feedback notes is located on the ground floor of the Beyster Building, behind the Foo Bar. Submissions made here will also be picked up regularly by the faculty chair of the DEI Committee.
Report confidentially: discuss your concerns with someone not mandated to share information
If you want to maintain confidentiality, or are uncertain whether you want to have a formal complaint filed, your first action might be to contact those who are not considered individuals with reporting obligations (IROs). Confidential employees can also help you make a report if you decide you wish to do so.
Please note that reporting is encouraged, and while CSE faculty and staff who are not designated as IROs are not mandated to report concerns, they also are not prohibited from doing so. You may wish to discuss with these faculty and staff whether or not you would like your concerns reported.

For confidential conversations on campus
There are also Confidential Resources on campus, who can maintain confidentiality within the University for the individual who shared the information. Confidential Resources are prohibited from disclosing confidential information until (1) given permission by the person who disclosed the information; (2) there is an imminent threat of harm to self or others; (3) the conduct involves suspected abuse of a minor under the age of 18; or (4) as otherwise required or permitted by law or court order. For confidential conversations regarding LGBTQIA+ concerns
Students and community members have asked about particular channels for reporting LGBTQIA+ concerns or asking related questions in CSE. While gender and gender identities and sexual orientations are explicitly celebrated parts of Michigan Engineering Diversity, and any person or resource listed on this page would be happy to discuss such issues, some may feel more comfortable approaching people who self-identify as part of that community, such as:

- To report concerns of sexual assault, stalking, intimate partner violence, sexual or gender-based harassment, other forms of discrimination including discriminatory harassment under the University’s Nondiscrimination Statement, contact the Office for Institutional Equity.

The University’s Ethics, Integrity & Compliance website provides complete and updated information on the University’s commitment to maintaining the highest ethical, scholarly and professional standards and provides additional resources and information about reporting. It also provides a reporting link for purposes of making a report related to ethics and integrity.
Reporting through the Office for Institution Equity
Currently, reports should continue to be made through the existing Office for Institutional Equity.
You may also report concerns and learn more about the University’s policies and available resources, at sexualmisconduct.umich.edu.

Assistance from individuals with reporting obligations
Those who are required to report your concerns of prohibited behavior involving sexual assault, sexual or gender-based misconduct, intimate partner violence, stalking, or retaliation related to reports of any of the above concerns, are called individuals with reporting obligations (IROs). IROs can also help you to make a report yourself.
Be aware that if you share information with the following contacts, considered IROs, they are mandated to share information they receive about any prohibited conduct with the Equity, Civil Rights and Title IX (ECRT) Office, and you will likely be contacted by ECRT for more information regarding your concerns and to make you aware of your options.
