New Directions in Electrical Energy and Power Systems

Abstract: Electricity supply systems are changing. Centralized generation is giving way to widely distributed energy sources, from wind generation to fuel cells. Advances in power electronics, control strategies and communication systems underlie enhanced grid controllability and load responsiveness. Plug hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) open up possibilities for bulk energy storage. The seminar will review these various developments. In response to the changing world of electricity supply and utilization, EECS is
establishing a new group in energy conversion and power systems. An overview of activities will be provided, including plans for new courses, labs and research directions.
