Security Research at IBM

Security is increasingly becoming a concern of the boardroom. Worries about business continuity, corporate reputation, widely distributed systems, rapidly increasing security threats, identity management, and employee and customer privacy are just a few of the things keeping CEO's up at night. At the same time, governments around the world are beginning to realize that security is the key to the worldwide infrastructure. In this talk I will describe some of the projects going on at IBM's Research labs around
the world, ranging from fundamental advances in cryptography, to pushing the limits of evaluated systems, to wireless LAN security, among others.

Dr. Charles C. Palmer manages the Network Security and Cryptography
department at IBM's Thomas J. Watson Research Center. His teams work in
the areas of cryptography research, internet security technologies, Java
security, privacy, and the Global Security Analysis lab — also known as
the "ethical hackers" — which he co-founded in 1995. Palmer frequently
speaks on the topics of computer and network security at conferences
around the world. He was also an adjunct professor of computer science
at Polytechnic University from 1993 to 1997. He holds five patents and
has several publications from his work at IBM and Polytechnic. He
received his PhD. from Polytechnic in 1994.
