This talk will examine the emergence and challenge of intelligent distributed systems. It will focus on the communications software that underlies distributed real-time applications with thousands of cooperating applications. The technology is based on data-centric publish subscribe real-time middleware. The talk will summarize the evolution, core principles and theory behind this technology. It will also overview the popular Data Distribution Service (DDS) standard that underlies the growing real-time middleware industry.

DDS middlware is in active use in many hundreds of applications. The talk will feature practical use cases in applications including controlling farms of wind turbines, safety augmentation based on driverless car technology, system integration of complex navy ships, unmanned vehicles and ground stations, NASA robotics, industrial automation, and medical imaging systems.
Stan Schneider is the CEO of Real-Time Innovations (RTI), the largest vendor of embedded middleware. RTI's communications backbone enables systems – from the smallest embedded devices to the largest enterprise servers "“ to seamlessly share information and work together as one. RTI customers span aerospace and defense, process automation, financial services, energy, automobiles, health sciences, and transportation.

Stan has extensive experience in real-time systems. He is an original author of the ScopeTools line of performance and monitoring tools (acquired by Wind River) and the ControlShell robotics software platform. Stan managed the Aerospace Robotics laboratory at Stanford, focusing on intelligent mechanical systems. Before that, he led the software team responsible for a personal computer product line. He began his career in automotive impact testing at the University of Michigan's Transportation Research Institute.

Stan completed his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at Stanford University, and holds a BS and MS from the University of Michigan. He is a graduate of Stanford's Advanced Management College.
